In the morning of April 10, 2023, Assemblyman Narh Eric Agblazo of the Sra Electoral Area in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region passed away unexpectedly after being struck by a fast car while riding his motorcycle.
As Narh Eric Agblazo attempted to cross the road in the direction of the Somanya settlement and was struck by a motorcycle with the licence plate M-20-GV-1670, he died instantaneously.
He was reportedly struck by the Hyundai Accent sedan with the licence plate GV 6561-11 while it was travelling from Somanya to Accra, instantly killing him.
The deceased was hit by the vehicle and dragged several metres away from the scene, instantly killing him, according to an eyewitness and fellow Assembly member for the Oterkporlu Electoral Area named Ebenezer Teye Nartey, whose home is directly across from the household of his late colleague.
“The Senior Assemblyman left his house on a motorbike this morning around eight o’clock… Going towards Somanya town, a vehicle travelling from Somanya to Accra came from behind. I’m not sure whose fault it was, but all I saw was that the vehicle struck the Assemblyman’s motorcycle, dragged it for about ten metres, and then the Assemblyman finally fell from the motorcycle directly to the ground and crashed his head with his face lying down. His colleague passed away at the scene, he continued.
Both the car and the motorbike suffered severe damage as a result of the collision.
The anonymous driver, who was reportedly driving alone when the incident occurred, fled the area as soon as it occurred and hurried to the Somanya police station to file a formal complaint.
Ebenezer Teye Nartey criticised the frequent accidents on the Sra – Trom stretch of the road, saying that the situation endangered the safety of students at the several schools located there. He also pleaded with the Ghana Highways Authority to install speed ramps in the area to prevent fatalities.
The late Assemblyman is rumoured to have passed away suddenly while en route to a meeting about welfare.
Mr. Agblazo, a member of the Assembly’s welfare committee, was reportedly at home with his wife and three children when he received a call inviting him and other members to a meeting on welfare on Monday morning.
His wife, a nursing mother who had just said goodbye to her husband when she learned the awful news of the tragedy, went to the scene but was stopped by onlookers from getting too close to the sight.
Even though he wasn’t in town when the accident occurred, Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly presiding member Hon. Robert Kwasi Agede said he sent another assemblyman to the spot to check the situation after receiving word of the tragic news by phone from another assembly member.
He called the act “shocking,” adding that the Assembly is in mourning at the death of the Lawmaker.
“It is terrible to hear what happened to our colleague, as we did not anticipate receiving any news of this type.
We’re all grieving,” he lamented.
He sent his heartfelt sympathies to the grieving wife, kids, and entire family for the passing of their relative.
The late Assemblyman’s remains have been placed in the hospital serving the Yilo Krobo District for an autopsy and preservation.
