Special Olympics Ghana Set to Conquer World Stage in Berlin

Special Olympics Ghana (SOG) is gearing up for the World Special Olympics Games 2023 in Berlin, Germany, and they are determined to give their competitors a tough challenge. Led by the Acting National Director, Mr. Denniswise Amomoo-Quainoo, the team of 19 athletes began their seven-week intensive training at the Tema Senior High School (TEMASCO) two weeks ago. The competition is scheduled to take place from 17th to 25th June 2023, and Ghana is participating in three events, namely, Tennis, Football, and Athletics.

Mr. Amomoo-Quainoo expressed his confidence in the team, stating that they were committed to giving their best to win laurels at the competition. He emphasized the need to provide the team with adequate resources and preparations to energize them for the global event. He revealed that Ghana’s previous successes in Special Olympics competitions were the team’s motivational drive to raise the flag of Ghana high.

For the most part, Ghana has been one of the best sides on the African continent, and they have won several medals in previous editions of the Special Olympics. In 2015, Ghana won four silver medals in the Word Summer in the United Arab Emirates. In 2019, they won two gold medals in athletics and a silver medal in football in Abu Dhabi. In the 2020 Special Olympics Africa Games in Egypt, Ghana won four gold medals, seven silver medals, and six bronze medals.

The Acting National Director of SOG thanked the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) for their contribution towards Ghana’s participation. He also appealed to other corporate entities and individuals for support to acquire logistics for the team.

In a nutshell, SOG is ready for the world, and they are determined to win medals in Berlin. Their success story in Special Olympics competitions gives them hope and motivates them to do more. With adequate resources and preparations, Ghana can conquer the world stage in Berlin.
