Shari Smiley was a longtime lit agent and manager, she had a long career in book to movie circles, and most recently had restarted her Smiley Management banner. She had been at 3 Arts, after a four-year stint at The Gotham Group before that.
In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Barbizon, and An Anonymous Girl were dramatic rights to several titles, notably, she sold when she was The Gotham Group, all of which resulted in bidding wars.
J.R.R. Tolkien Estate had Smiley as a consultant for the executor.

In 1993 she began as a receptionist, at CAA, Shari Smiley spent the bulk of her 18 years’ worth of career, selling more books there than some of the tenured agents. Gillian Flynn, Cheryl Strayed, Jodi Picoult, Lauren Weisberger, and Mary Kubica, to name a few were the same many best-selling authors she worked with.
