A 27-year-old associate pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, Joseph Wiredu Mensah, has been acquitted and discharged by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast. Mensah was initially accused of defiling a 14-year-old girl at Ekumfi Eyisam in the Ekumfi District.

According to the prosecution, Mensah had sexual intercourse with the victim on three occasions between November and December last year. The victim collapsed during the last encounter, which led to her being admitted to the Saltpond Government Hospital.

After hearing the statements of both parties, the trial Judge, Mr. Kofi Seshie Ametewee, stated that the prosecution had not provided enough evidence to convict Mensah. He noted that the victim did not report the incident to her room-mate or at the hospital, and instead informed her three best friends at school.

While the prosecution did not present any of the victim’s friends to testify and offer more credibility to the case, Mensah maintained that the victim had informed him that she had been defiled while living in Ashaiman.

For the most part, a sexual encounter is an intimate affair, and the victim would likely know their assailant. However, in this case, there were serious doubts about the evidence provided by the prosecution. As a result, the judge found Mensah not guilty of the charges and acquitted him.

It is crucial to note that sexual assault and defilement are serious offenses, and victims should be encouraged to report any incidents to the authorities immediately. The justice system plays a vital role in ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice and that victims receive the support they need to recover from their ordeal.
