Ursula-Owusu Ekuful, a Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, has expressed surprise that her name is among those apparently being considered as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
When questioned by the host of Mpu ne Mpu on UTV if she was aware that her name was included in the list of running mates for Vice President, she answered “saa,” which means “really.”
Shortly after Dr Bawumia was named flagbearer of the NPP in November 2023, a list purporting to provide a roster of those vying for the Vice President position surfaced on social media.
The unconfirmed compilation included names such as Chief of Staff Frema Opare, Roads Minister Kwasi Amoako Atta, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu, Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum, and others.
It’s been more than two months, and Dr. Bawumia has failed to name his running companion for the 2024 general elections.
Mrs Ursula-Ekuful claims to have had multiple talks with the Vice President, but none of them have been about the running mate job.
She feels that Dr. Bawumia should be left alone to prepare and pick the best candidate for the position.
“I have had numerous discussions with Dr Bawumia, but we have not talked about the running mate position. We have work to do. I’d want us to leave him to select his own running mate. He should take his time to find someone he wants. We have been talking about what we need to do this year to help citizens and our chances as a party,” she said.
Some people have encouraged the Vice President to choose an Ashanti Region native as his running partner in order to strengthen his support in their home region.
