President Akufo-Addo has nominated two individuals as Municipal Chief Executive and District Chief Executive for Krachi East and Offinso North respectively. Bernard Aboakoia Mensah has been nominated as the MCE for Krachi East in the Oti Region, while Albert Sefa Boampong has been nominated as the DCE for Offinso North in the Ashanti Region. These nominations are in accordance with the 1992 Constitution and the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) (as amended).
In a statement issued by the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, it was indicated that the nominees would be confirmed by their respective assemblies as part of the process to secure the appointment. The statement urged the nominees to avail themselves to the last leg of the process to be confirmed.
The nomination of Bernard Aboakoia Mensah as MCE for Krachi East comes after the sudden death of the MCE, Francis Kofi Okesu, in September 2022. As a result, the municipality has been without an MCE for some eight months now. The nomination of Albert Sefa Boampong comes five months after the death of the District Chief Executive of the Offinso North Assembly, David Akwasi Asare Boakye, who passed away on November 7, 2022, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
It is essential to note that the appointment of MCEs and DCEs is significant to the country’s governance, particularly at the local level. MCEs and DCEs play a critical role in promoting local development and ensuring that the government’s agenda is effectively implemented at the local level. They are responsible for ensuring that the assembly’s decisions and policies are effectively executed, and they must work hand in hand with the assembly members to ensure that the local development agenda is achieved.
For the most part, the nomination of these individuals is a step towards filling the leadership gap that existed in these municipalities. It is expected that they will work diligently towards promoting local development and ensuring that the government’s agenda is effectively executed at the local level. The nominees must work hand in hand with the assembly members to ensure that the local development agenda is achieved.
