Presbyterian University Ghana (PUG) has called for an intensive focus on graduate education in the country to sustain growth and development in the knowledge economy. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, emphasized the need for high-level postgraduate training to achieve strategic breakthroughs in cutting-edge research. He urged stakeholders to support developmental research that provides timely solutions to the country’s challenges.

At the fourth graduation ceremony of the School of Graduate Studies in Akropong, PUG, 313 postgraduate students graduated successfully from Educational Studies, International Development Studies, Environmental Health and Sanitation, Natural Resources Management, Financial Risk Management, and Public Health programs. Prof. Oduro Owusu stressed the need to produce skilled and result-oriented mindsets that can sustain the country’s developmental agenda.

To achieve this goal, PUG has introduced the “Project in Mind; Product in Hand Concept,” which ensures that students enroll with a project in mind and graduate with a product in hand. This approach enables students to develop creativity, compete in the job market, and become job creators rather than job seekers. This will also provide the nation with mature and competent brains who will become the next generation of leaders.

Prof. Oduro Owusu highlighted the values of discipline, excellence, integrity, hard work, and faith in God as essential for achieving successful results. He also announced that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has indicated its intention to grant PUG accreditation to run a PhD in Development and Management and an MBA in Human Resource Management and Development after inspecting its facilities next month.

PUG is committed to ensuring that the quality of teaching, learning, and research is world-class and par excellence. The university is currently developing other programs, including a PhD in Leadership and Management, a Master of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies, an MBA in Project Development, a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling, and a Master of Science in Information Communication Technology.

For the most part, PUG appeals to its development partners, the business community, philanthropists, and government to support its developmental efforts. The university is poised to make a significant contribution to Ghana’s knowledge economy through its commitment to producing highly qualified graduates with entrepreneurial skills and a desire to make a positive impact on society.
