A private security man, Pius Anundoabil Ayoma, who had escaped from police custody in March, has appeared before the Circuit Court in Accra to testify against a police officer who allegedly aided his escape. Ayoma, who had been remanded into the Nsawam Prison Custody after his appearance at the High Court, has pleaded guilty with an explanation to counts 1 and 3 of Conspiracy to escape from lawful custody and Causing unlawful damage, respectively.

He claimed that the police officer gave a hacksaw blade to his fellow accused, Godwin Klu, and convinced him to join the plot to escape. The plan was allegedly hatched by the policeman and Klu, but Ayoma joined due to his severe pains and sickness. Ayoma also pleaded not guilty to counts 2 and 4, which are Conspiracy to commit a crime to wit Causing unlawful damage and Escaping from lawful custody.

In light of Ayoma’s testimony, the court has directed that the policeman who allegedly abetted the escape be investigated. The officer has been detained by the police pending investigation. For the most part, the prosecution has claimed that the two accused prisoners were remanded at the Manet Police Station cells, with Ayoma facing charges of robbery and attempted murder and Klu facing a charge of stealing. While arrangements were underway to convey the two accused persons to prison custody, they allegedly hatched a plan to escape. They broke the burglar proof at the cell’s window, caused damage to the wire mesh, and tore the mosquito net, creating a hole for their escape.

On March 2, 2023, at about 2:00 am, Klu attempted to go through the hole, but his heavy build body did not allow him. Ayoma also attempted to escape, but his trousers got hooked on the rough edge of the iron rod used to construct the burglar-proof. He was hanging on the window, but Klu released his trousers from the iron rod and gave them to him to wear before escaping. Klu could not escape and was escorted to Ankaful Prisons to commence his sentence, while a search party was formed to recapture Ayoma. The accused person was eventually recaptured on May 4, 2023, at about 8:00 pm, hiding between Shukura and Afienya.
