The National Cathedral Project will be the subject of an impartial investigation by Parliament.
The decision was made in response to a resolution that certain NDC MPs and the North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, had sponsored claiming serious irregularities surrounding the $400 million project.
On Thursday, August 3, Mr. Ablakwa moved the motion and stated that $58 million had already been spent on the project. He argued, nonetheless, that the amount of work done on it did not match the money that was spent.
He thus requested the House to look into the claims of misappropriation in its spending, which require an explanation.
“This motion is a very important one and I pray that this House will approve this under Order 191. The Order provides that the House at any time by motion appoint a special or adhoc committee to investigate any matter of national importance. The National Cathedral of Ghana is potentially the most expensive project of Ghana.
“Already, Mr. Speaker as we speak this project has ballooned from an initial $100m to $400m and is still rising.
“So far, Mr Speaker about $58m has been spent on the project and what we see has become a subject of considerable controversy. We only see a hole and we are not too sure if it is really $58 million that has gone into the project,” he said.
The North Tongu MP has previously revealed several details about the project’s construction that, in his opinion, are questionable.
He provided proof of some of the incorporation forms for the project’s financing in his final letter.
On May 4, Mr. Ablakwa published a number of papers on Facebook to support his assertions that the project is riddled with illegal behavior.
