Ghanaian rap icon, Okyeame Kwame, is confident of bagging another VGMA (Vodafone Ghana Music Awards) Artiste of the Year award before he retires from the music scene. The ‘Rap Doctor’ made this known during an interview with Osei Felicia on ‘Adwuma Adwuma’ on Onua FM.
Having previously won several VGMA awards, including the Artiste of the Year award in 2009, Okyeame Kwame believes he has what it takes to clinch the prestigious award once again. The rapper mentioned that getting hits, creating an album or EP, performing at more shows, and more activations are key factors that can aid in winning the award.
“For the most part, winning the Artiste of the Year award isn’t such a difficult feat,” he said. “You only have to get hits, create an album or EP, and perform more shows and activations which can help you to remain relevant.”
Okyeame Kwame shared his experience during his previous win, which was against the hiplife duo, Praye. He recalled how he won against them with his hit song “Wo So” against their song “Angelina.”
“During my time, it was brutal. It was between myself and Praye. They had ‘Angelina’ and I had ‘Wo So’. We had each received 4 awards, and the Artiste of the Year award would decide the winner. It wasn’t easy, but it was unbelievable and a great feeling,” he said.
The rapper also shed light on the process of nominating and selecting the VGMA Artiste of the Year by the Board and Academy. He noted that winning the popular vote doesn’t always guarantee winning the ultimate prize due to the guidelines and voting process of the Academy and Board.
In a nutshell, Okyeame Kwame’s confidence in winning another Artiste of the Year award has excited his fans, who are eagerly anticipating his next.
