Abraham Koomson, the general secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour, has lamented Ghanaians’ “numerous” tax obligations.
He claimed that the finance minister is perplexed about how to operate the economy because there are currently roughly 17 taxes.
He makes this statement following the approval of the three revenue-related bills: the Excise Duty, Growth and Sustainability Levy, and Income Amendment Bills.
“This government is in a state of confusion, especially the finance minister, who is incompetent.
About seventeen taxes have already been paid, including the 5% import duty, the 15% import VAT, the processing fee, the ECOWAS Levy, the Network Charge VAT, the Network Charge Covid-19 levy, the Ghana Shippers Authority SNF fee, the Import National Health Insurance, the Network Charge National Health Insurance, the IRS Tax deposit, and the Special Import Levy.
He was quoted by 3news.com as saying, “We don’t need taxes again. Seventeen taxes are being paid before these three new ones.”
However, he said that these levies needed to be used wisely, particularly if the nation wanted to get assistance from the IMF.
Because we are aware that approaching the IMF has so many repercussions, he continued, “our current issue is that the taxes that we are paying, if they are not being applied effectively, that is the predicament that we will find ourselves in.”
