Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, is facing backlash after his comments during a health walk organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kwahu on April 8. In his statement, he said that the NPP would not hand over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and threatened that they would use any means necessary to stay in power beyond the 2024 elections.

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the NPP, has criticized Acheampong’s comments, calling them “irresponsible, violent, destructive, senseless, and uncalled for.” He added that some of them will not sit idly by as Acheampong seeks to press the destructive button of the 4th Republic, and they are determined to take action.

Nyaho-Tamakloe went on to say that Ghana has never known political and economic peace since the removal of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1966. He added that the political class comes in for a period, and the military takes over, a situation that has only retarded the country’s development. He believes that Acheampong’s indiscipline and violent tendencies have reached legendary levels and that it’s time for the President and the NPP leadership to call him to sanity.

Nyaho-Tamakloe also stated that the NPP party will not collapse, but Acheampong’s behavior is inimical to national development and alien to the NPP’s values. He called for Acheampong to withdraw his comments and render an unqualified apology to the good people of Ghana. He further advised Acheampong to focus on bread-and-butter issues instead of resorting to hooliganism.

Nyaho-Tamakloe’s words are a reminder that Ghana needs to prioritize development and unity over political power. The country cannot afford to go back to the days of coups and military rule. It’s time for Ghana’s leaders to set aside their differences and work together to build a better future for all Ghanaians.
