The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been accused by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of employing subpar strategies in the lead-up to the Assin North by-election.
Richard Ahiagbah, the director of communications for the NPP, said that the NDC has been spreading falsehoods to gain cheap political advantage.
He charged the NDC with fabricating and disseminating a video that purported to be from the NPP’s Assin North constituency chairman. The chairman allegedly gave up because the NPP would lose the by-election, according to the video.
The content of the film, according to Mr. Ahiagbah, who is now in Assin North, was fake and an attempt by NDC members to persuade the electorates in favour of their cause.
“NDC is posing a challenging issue for our democracy moving forward. It is quite upsetting that they have gone to Assin North to deceive and engage in dialogue there by employing a variety of communist inferior strategies. It may be beneficial for their politics right now, but it hurts and makes it harder for our descendants’ democracy to continue once we leave the stage.
“The NDC recently produced a video in which our constituency chairman in Assin North was wrongly claimed to have quit up because we would lose the seat. As a result, they are only there to perform tasks that they are unable to, yet it is inevitable that NDC will win the seat. The video was entirely made up by NDC and is entirely bogus. The NPP Communications Director informed Selorm Adonoo, anchor of the Big Issue on Citi TV, that he is coordinating things here [in Assin North].
The footage, according to him, is deceptive.
He claimed that the NPP has sent out all of its officials, who are assiduously working to win the seat on the ground.
“That film isn’t from us; if the NDC claims they aren’t behind it, whomever is responsible is lying and fooling Ghanaians. NPP is actively engaged in local work. Our whole national and regional executive team has been stationed here. They are arranging and interacting at the location this morning. All the lies that the NDC is spreading will be debunked by us. As though falsehoods are a major part of politics. The NDC is straying from the realm of reason and spreading outright lies and distortions, he noted.
The by-election date has been established by the Election Commission (EC) as June 27.
While Charles Opoku is the NPP’s nominee, the NDC is running James Gyakye Quayson again.
The by-election was called in response to a Supreme Court decision that declared James Gyakye Quayson’s election as Member of Parliament for Assin North to be null and illegal and ordered Parliament to remove his name from the records of Parliament.
Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, subsequently urged the Supreme Court to elaborate on its ruling.
