The upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) may be postponed as Dr. Kwabena Duffuor’s campaign team files an injunction application over concerns about the electoral album. Antonio Edem Asinyo, spokesperson for Dr. Duffuor, justified the application, stating that errors have been identified and need to be resolved before the elections take place. He urged the party leadership to admit their mistakes and invite all stakeholders to discuss the issue.

However, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, disagrees and insists that the election will not be postponed. He clarified that they have not submitted the photo album to the Electoral Commission as they are not obliged to go by the album and it does not form a substantive argument. Gbande also stated that the party did nothing wrong in not getting the album right. He added that stakeholders have a responsibility to check the system and when errors are identified, they need to be corrected.

Dr. Duffuor, a flagbearer aspirant, filed the injunction application at the High Court on Tuesday, May 9, seeking to stop the primaries over concerns about the electoral album. He claims that the partial delivery of the album to his representatives on May 4 was out of time, given the magnitude of the verification exercise required before the internal elections on May 13.

Dr. Duffuor’s campaign team had earlier demanded a postponement of the primaries over what they described as a flawed register. The team sent a petition to the Electoral Commission and Elections Committee of the NDC, stating that an extensive review of the voters’ register for 220 constituencies had identified several discrepancies that rendered the register incomplete or inaccurate. The team claimed that going into the election with such a register undermines the credibility and integrity of the election and is capable of causing irreparable damage to Dr. Duffuor’s candidacy.

For the most part, the situation remains unclear as the NDC leadership and Dr. Duffuor’s campaign team have differing opinions on the matter. It remains to be seen whether the injunction will be granted or whether the elections will take place as scheduled. In any case, it is crucial that the issues raised are addressed, and the electoral process is conducted with transparency and fairness.
