The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong’s “treasonable” comments, in which he said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would never hand over power to the NDC. According to the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Kwetey, Acheampong’s comments are reckless and reflect the NPP’s deep-seated determination to subvert Ghana’s democratic order.

Kwetey described Acheampong’s statement as “utterly reckless and treasonable.” The former Minister of State in Charge of National Security had made the comment at an NPP delegates conference in Kwahu on Saturday, April 8. The NDC condemns this brazen statement in no uncertain terms, said Kwetey.

He also accused President Akufo-Addo of expressing a determination to “hand over to an NPP Government in 2025” at an NPP conference in Kumasi in 2021. Kwetey reminded everyone of the Nana Addo-led desperate attempts to steal the 2008 elections in the strongroom of the electoral commission and other attempts by his desperate party to put dead bodies in water bodies in the Volta region all with a view to subverting the will of the people in that critical election.

Bryan Acheampong had earlier assured members of the NPP that the economy would bounce back, saying that the government is working to secure a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He added that hopefully by June this year, the deal will be closed, leading to the resurgence of the economy.

The Abetifi Lawmaker then went on to warn the NDC, stating that the NPP will never stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC, and that they will do everything possible to make sure the NPP remains in government at all costs.

Kwetey reiterated that the NDC condemns Acheampong’s comments and called for the preservation of Ghana’s democratic order. He urged the NPP to play by the rules and ensure a free and fair election in 2024.
