Fataw Abdella, a prisoner who fled from legitimate prison custody naked, was sentenced to four years in hard labor by the Tarkwa Circuit Court.
Despite pleading guilty to the accusation, Abdella asked the presiding judge, Mrs Hathia Ama Manu, to temper justice with pity since he had been deceived by a fellow prisoner.
However, the court stressed to Abdella that the purpose of punishment was to discourage future criminals like him and to protect the country.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Joseph Lartey, informed the court that the complainant, Superintendent Bright Gbogbo, was the second in command at Tarkwa Local Prison, and Abdella was a remand prisoner in a robbery case.
He said that the inmates’ bathroom in the prison yard was not roofed and was merely protected by razor wire mesh coiled around wooden bars attached to the walls.
On December 1, 2023, at around 1430 hours, Abdella climbed over the razor wire mesh and jumped over the prison walls entirely nude in an attempt to escape.
According to Chief Inspector Lartey, several jail officials on duty recognized Abdella and raised the alarm by blowing the emergency siren, which drew additional policemen and members of the public to catch him.
He said Abdella bolted through the Cyanide village and railway quarters on his way to the Tarkwa Banso road, but a jail guard captured him and took him back to the prison yard with the help of a cab driver.
According to the prosecutor, the event was reported to police, and during the inquiry, Abdella brought them to the crime site and explained how he mounted the wall.
Abdella was about to stand trial in the same court for his earlier robbery accusation.
