Helen Hewlett, a 44-year-old mother of five, has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for attempting to hire a hitman to murder her former colleague and lover, Paul Belton. Hewlett paid more than £20,000 worth of Bitcoin to a fake website on the dark web called “Online Killers Market”. She wanted Belton to be killed in a way that would appear accidental. The relationship between the two began with a brief fling, but Belton rejected Hewlett’s advances, prompting her to seek revenge.

During the trial, the prosecution argued that despite the fake website, Hewlett intended to have Belton killed. The court heard that she became “utterly fixated” on him and sent him numerous emails and nude photographs, begging him to see her again. She even got a job in the same food factory where Belton worked to pursue him. When he continued to reject her, Hewlett stalked him and posted comments on Facebook, saying that he “needs shooting in the bollocks”.

Hewlett’s obsession with Belton eventually led her to set up a cryptocurrency account in January last year and transfer over £22,000 into it from her own accounts. She used the money to pay for the hitman on the fake website, but the Bitcoin ended up in a Romanian account.

Hewlett was found guilty of soliciting murder and stalking, but was cleared of the more serious charge of stalking causing alarm or distress. She was also given a concurrent three-month sentence for stalking. The judge ruled that she was a “dangerous offender” and gave her an extended five-year license period on top of her custodial sentence.

For the most part, the trial showed how dangerous obsession can be and how it can lead to extreme and criminal behavior. Hewlett’s actions not only put Belton’s life in danger but also affected her own family’s lives. Her sentence serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to act on their dangerous impulses. It also highlights the importance of seeking help and support for mental health issues and unhealthy relationships before they spiral out of control.
