The planned protest against Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and his appointees by the Minority caucus in Parliament has been postponed till September 12, 2023.
Originally, the demo was scheduled for September 5, 2023.
However, according to a statement issued by the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the new date was chosen as a result of Monday’s court hearings.
“The court was unable to give an instant ruling due to the weight of the preliminary legal objections raised by the lawyers for the Minority in Parliament and requested the indulgence of the Minority to give its ruling on Friday, September 8, 2023,” the statement read.
The march will undoubtedly take place on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, as the caucus has urged Ghanaians to be steadfast in the struggle to defend the constitutional freedom to protest.
Demands for the resignation of Dr. Addison and his deputies grew louder when the Central Bank revealed in its annual report that the 2022 fiscal year saw a GH60.81 billion deficit.
The gathering intended to march from Kola, past Opera Square and Rawlings Park to the entrance of the Bank of Ghana headquarters in Accra.
However, the police suggested changing the routes, claiming that doing so might disrupt public order, safety, and the operation of crucial services because the region is frequently congested with both people and vehicular traffic.
The Minority had rejected the police’s alternative route, which began at Parliament House and went through the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light before ending at Independence Square.
In response, the Police filed an injunction against the march on August 30.
