Mental Health Challenges Faced by Pastors in Ghanaian Churches

One in four pastors is suffering from mental illness, according to mental health clinician Dr Kwame Frimpong. This is due to the burden of running the church while also handling the challenges faced by their members. Pastors often act as psychologists and counsellors, adding to their workload and stress levels.

Dr Frimpong spoke about this on the ‘Christian and Mental Health’ episode of ‘A Walk with Jesus‘ with Pastor Ato Acquah, discussing a real-life story of a caller who phoned into Joy FM’s late afternoon programme, ‘Drive Time’, to talk about his decision to commit suicide due to a marital problem.

The issue of mental health has become increasingly relevant to pastors, who are now seeking knowledge in clinical psychology to help their church members. However, pastors must prioritize their own mental health and wellbeing.

Dr Frimpong urged pastors not to turn themselves into counsellors or psychologists, but to employ clinical psychologists or professional counsellors to partner with them in their work. He also recommended that local churches have a psychologist or professional counsellor on board to partner with the church prayer warriors effectively.

According to Dr Frimpong, some mental health disorders could be demonic, but others are psychological. He suggested that churches bring the subject of mental health back to the pulpit and educate members. Without proper education and support, pastors may suffer from burnout and other mental health issues.

For the most part, pastors play an essential role in their communities, but they should prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. By partnering with clinical psychologists and professional counsellors, they can provide better support to their members and avoid burnout.
