An jobless man was convicted Ghana three years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court for sharing sexual images of his ex-girlfriend on social media with his pals.
Joshua Asiedu, alias Kwame Ketewa, was also sentenced to pay the 19-year-old victim GH10,000 in compensation for the suffering and emotional anguish he caused her.
The punishment was handed down after a court presided over by Mrs Christina Cann found Asiedu guilty of non-consensual distribution of personal photos.
According to police, Asiedu posted the victim’s naked photos on his WhatsApp status since she had broken up with him.
The court did observe, however, that the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case against Asiedu in terms of death threats and domestic violence to wit emotional abuse.
As a result, Asiedu was acquitted and released on two counts.
In his mitigation argument, Asiedu asked the trial court for compassion, adding, “All the allegations against me are false.”
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, the complainant is a 49-year-old businessman from Accra.
According to the report, the victim is a 19-year-old Senior High School graduate who lives with her mother in Odorkor, Accra.
According to the prosecution, the inmate also lives in Odorkor.
In 2018, Asiedu had an unlawful contact with the victim, which her father discovered.
According to the prosecution, the victim told Asiedu she was no longer interested in the relationship and broke up with him.
The prosecution said thereafter, “The accused person always calls the victim to threaten her with words that he will deal with her and that if she wants to lose her life or she wants her mother to lose her, then she should play with him and that made the victim feel constantly unhappy, miserable, humiliated, ridiculed, afraid, jittery, depressed and worthless.”
According to the prosecutor, Asiedu, who was upset with the victim’s actions, uploaded her naked images on his WhatsApp status for public access in 2021.
According to him, Asiedu then shared the images with Kasia and Sika, two of the victims’ acquaintances.
It was also stated that the officials at the victim’s school recognized that the girl was undergoing emotional torture and invited her parents to the school.
The victim was also handed over to a school counselor, and a report on her was submitted following her counseling session.
According to the prosecution, on May 17, 2021, the complainant reported Asiedu’s behavior to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit (DOVVSU).
According to the report, Asiedu escaped to an unknown place after discovering that he was being hunted by the police.
According to the prosecution, Asiedu resurfaced and was detained on January 26, 2023.
The prosecutor added that an investigative caution statement was acquired from him, and images of the victim’s naked pictures, as well as audios of the threats, were collected from her father’s cell phones for evidentiary reasons.
