After nearly four years, President Nana Akufo-Addo is still waiting for a telegram of congratulations from his rival, John Mahama, on his win in the 2020 election.

In a national speech delivered on Saturday before of the January 7 Constitution Day commemoration, Akufo-Addo reviewed the election whose outcome was challenged in court.

“On a lighter note, three years on, I am still waiting for my main opponent in the 2020 election to congratulate me on my victory,” he said.

The former President, who was the NDC’s 2020 Presidential Candidate, sued the Electoral Commission (EC) and President Akufo-Addo, claiming that the December 7 election results were invalid.

He called the 2020 presidential election “one of the worst organized in this country since 1992.”

Mr Mahama, who lost the 2016 election but hoped to win again in 2020, petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the declaration and force a re-run between himself and Akufo-Addo.

After three months of hearings, a seven-member panel of Supreme Court Judges unanimously rejected the election petition on March 4, 2021.

Former Chief Justice Anin Yeboah stated that the petitioner did not meet all of the court’s five criteria for deciding the matter.

In response to the judgment, Mr Mahama stated on Cape Coast-based Cape FM that the NDC was compelled to accept the finding for the sake of the country’s peace.
