Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has refuted claims that Former President John Dramani Mahama facilitated his release from the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on treason charges.

In a tweet, Koku Anyidoho stated that Mr Mahama only visited him while he was in detention to take a picture with him for his personal political agenda. He insisted that his release was as a result of the law.

This comes after some NDC members accused Koku Anyidoho of being ungrateful to Mr Mahama, who they claimed helped secure his release from BNI custody.

Koku Anyidoho was arrested on treason charges in 2018 following comments he made on a radio interview. In the interview, he suggested that President Akufo-Addo was likely to suffer the same fate as his father, who was overthrown in a military coup in 1972.

He had said, “There’ll be a civilian coup d’etat; there’ll be a social revolution and the movement is starting on Wednesday. He [Akufo-Addo] will be fed up at the Presidency.”

For the most part, Koku Anyidoho’s tweet suggests that his relationship with Mr Mahama has been strained. It is not clear what triggered the tweet, but it appears to be linked to his recent campaign for the NDC flagbearer position.

It is not unusual for politicians to use such incidents to score political points and sway public opinion in their favour. However, it is important to note that the relationship between Koku Anyidoho and Mr Mahama may not necessarily be as acrimonious as it seems.

In a nutshell, Koku Anyidoho’s tweet is likely to stoke the flames of controversy surrounding his arrest and release, but it also raises questions about the nature of his relationship with Mr Mahama. Only time will tell whether the two men will reconcile their differences or continue to feud in public.
