The 24th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) saw singer King Promise end his four-year drought at the award ceremony by winning two awards. The event, held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) on May 6, surprised many music fans when King Promise took home the Afrobeats/Afropop Song of the Year and Album of the Year awards.

The singer’s last VGMA win was in 2019, when he won the Songwriter of the Year award for his hit song CCTV. He has since received nominations but failed to win at the ceremony. His double win this year has come as a surprise to many.

Several other artists picked up awards at the event. Black Sherif won the Artiste of the Year award, while Esther Piesie won Best Gospel Artiste of The Year and Gospel Song of The Year. The night was also marked by performances from a host of popular musicians, including KIDI, DSL, Epixode, Lasmid, Gyakie, Sarkodie, Pheelz, and Ofori Amponsah.

The VGMA is one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in Ghana’s music industry, celebrating and recognizing the country’s top musicians and performers. The ceremony has been held annually since 2000, with past winners including popular artists such as Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, and Sarkodie.

For the most part, the ceremony has been successful in showcasing and promoting Ghanaian music to a wider audience. However, there have been controversies in the past, including disputes over award winners and technical difficulties during performances.

Despite these challenges, the VGMA remains an important event in Ghana’s cultural calendar and a platform for emerging artists to showcase their talents. With this year’s ceremony now over, music fans will be looking forward to seeing what the next year will bring in terms of new talent, exciting performances, and unexpected award winners.
