Less than a day after Buckingham Palace disclosed King Charles’ cancer diagnosis, Prince Harry flew from California to London to reunite with his father.
Upon landing at Heathrow Airport on February 6 (UK time), two black SUVs awaited the Duke of Sussex at the Windsor Suite. He was subsequently driven to Clarence House, where he was seen entering the building to meet his ailing father. This face-to-face meeting, lasting approximately 30 minutes, marked their first in-person reunion, as reported by The Sun.
According to a source, King Charles’ health is reportedly stable, with no evident signs of his illness. Prince William, Harry’s older brother, was not present at the reunion.
Later, Charles and Queen Camilla were pictured leaving Clarence House and heading back to Buckingham Palace. Subsequently, a helicopter departed from the palace to transport the family to their estate at Sandringham, situated 150km from London.
The raising of the royal standard at Sandringham indicated the monarch’s presence there. It is believed that Prince Harry received the news of his father’s diagnosis directly from Charles.
“The duke did speak with his father about his diagnosis. He will be travelling to the UK to see His Majesty in the coming days,” the source close to Harry told The Press Association on Monday.
Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, along with their children Prince Archie, aged 4, and Princess Lilibet, aged 2, have stayed in the United States.
Prince Harry’s quick decision to travel upon learning of his father’s cancer diagnosis echoed the anxious response he displayed during Queen Elizabeth II’s health scares in 2022.
A source close to the family revealed to Us Weekly that during his grandmother’s previous periods of ill health, Harry felt helpless in offering comfort to the Queen due to the physical separation between them.
“He felt helpless being 5000 miles away in Montecito (California) and has been checking-in non-stop with her,” they told the outlet at the time.
In 2020, the family relocated to Meghan’s home state, and that same year, Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as working members of the royal family. Prince Harry’s last visit to the UK was in May 2023 for his father’s coronation as king.
Recently, King Charles spent three nights in the hospital for a corrective procedure related to an enlarged prostate. Although the cancer is not prostate cancer, it was discovered as a separate issue. Buckingham Palace stated that the prostate procedure allowed for swift intervention upon detecting the cancer.
The palace’s official statement portrayed the King as optimistic about his upcoming regular treatments, during which he has been advised to postpone public engagements.
