The Keta Municipal Directorate of Health has recorded a remarkable milestone in the fight against malaria as there were no recorded malaria deaths in children under five in 2022. This achievement is attributed to the implementation of various malaria control programmes such as the distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets to pregnant women and children below five years and intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Municipal Director of Health Services, Mr Emmanuel Kona, attributed the success to the efforts of his team and partners who have been working tirelessly to raise awareness on malaria prevention and management. He noted that the Directorate would not rest on its laurels but rather continue with its malaria interventions to sustain the gains made.
As part of activities marking this year’s World Malaria Day, MTN Ghana Foundation in partnership with Keta Municipal Hospital organised a programme on the theme “Time to Deliver Zero Malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement.” During the programme, residents were sensitised on malaria prevention and management, screened for the disease, and possible treatment.
Mr Kona urged all stakeholders, including traditional leaders in malaria endemic areas, to follow all preventive measures and support the Directorate’s “test, treat, track” strategy in managing suspected cases. He also called on pregnant women and parents to support the Directorate’s efforts in the fight against malaria.
According to the World Health Organization, malaria remains a significant health threat, accounting for the death of thousands of people, particularly children in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2021, there were about 619,000 malaria deaths globally out of 247 million malaria cases, with sub-Saharan Africa alone accounting for 95 percent of all the cases and 96 per cent of all deaths. Children under five years accounted for about 80 per cent of malaria deaths in Africa.
For the most part, the Keta Municipal Directorate of Health’s success in recording zero malaria deaths in children under five is a positive step towards eradicating the disease. It underscores the importance of sustained efforts in implementing effective malaria control programmes and raising awareness on malaria prevention and management. With continued support from all stakeholders, it is possible to achieve zero malaria deaths in the municipality and ultimately in Ghana.
