Kennedy Agyapong, a businessman and politician vying for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position, has sent his well wishes to workers on this year’s May Day celebration. As Ghanaians commemorate the occasion with the theme “Protecting Incomes and Pensions in an Era of Economic Crises: Our Responsibility,” Agyapong urged workers to prioritize Ghana in their work.
“As an entrepreneur with a strong belief in workers’ rights, I wish Ghanaians a Happy May Day and entreat all to place Ghana first in their work every day,” he said.
Meanwhile, Morgan Ayawine, the General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), has called on employers to pay living wages that align with international standards. He emphasized that this would be commensurate with the toil and sacrifices workers make, leading to increased productivity, economic growth, and national development in Ghana.
Mr. Ayawine also stressed the importance of protecting workers’ pensions, noting that it should not be violated under any circumstance. He declared that achieving a living wage for Ghanaian workers, as well as safeguarding incomes and pensions, is the responsibility of all stakeholders in the country’s socio-economic equation.
The importance of a living wage and protecting pensions cannot be overstated. As workers strive to make ends meet in an increasingly challenging economic climate, it is the responsibility of employers and policymakers to ensure that they receive fair compensation for their labor. Workers are the backbone of the Ghanaian economy, and their contributions should be recognized and rewarded accordingly.
For the most part, the celebration of May Day is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of workers and the challenges they face. It is also a time to renew our commitment to improving their working conditions and ensuring that they receive fair compensation for their labor. As we commemorate this year’s May Day, let us remember the sacrifices that workers make every day and renew our pledge to protect their interests.
