John Sprague left behind his wife of 32 years, Sheila Sullivan Sprague, and his daughters Mary Sprague Lareau, Ann Warren, and Martha Sprague Janney. He is also survived by his stepsons Kevin Sullivan, Brian Sullivan, and Timothy Sullivan and his former spouse Peggy Sullivan.

John Sprague was born on November 11, 1927, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His parents were Horace J. Sprague and Ada Richards Sprague. He was raised in Webster Groves, MO, and Hyattsville, MD.
When he was 17, Sprague enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1945. He enrolled at the University of Maryland on the GI Bill in 1947. While he was in college, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He received a bachelor’s degree in business in 1951.
