Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he is the best candidate to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as its flagbearer into the 2024 presidential election. Speaking during his campaign tour of the Eastern region at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo constituency, Mahama said his vast experience as a politician makes him the perfect candidate for the job. He urged the party not to risk trying another person.
“We don’t want an experiment again. Let nobody tell us to try him. If I was sure that they can stand against NPP and win the elections, I wouldn’t have contested, but we can’t take the risk because the only person the NPP are scared of in the NDC is John Dramani Mahama,” he said.
He further added that the NPP has sleepless nights anytime they hear his name and that is why they keep telling the NDC to bring in a fresh face. Mahama emphasized that the party must not allow outsiders to dictate to them the kind of candidate they should field, citing an example of Kotoko dictating to Hearts of Oak the kind of player they should field as a captain and a goalkeeper in a match.
Mr. Mahama is seeking re-election as the flagbearer of the NDC ahead of the 2024 presidential election. He will be competing against former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Dufuor, and former Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu.
The former President’s comments come after some members of the NDC have called for fresh leadership in the party. However, Mr. Mahama believes he has what it takes to defeat the NPP in the next election and lead the country to prosperity.
