Jessica Mauboy shared details about nearly splitting with her husband, Themeli Magripilis, due to the challenges of managing a long-distance relationship.
Initially, Mauboy moved from Darwin to Sydney in 2009, leading to a period of long-distance dating until Magripilis eventually relocated in September 2016. While they now enjoy a “beautiful life” together in Sydney, Mauboy referenced a song from her new album, “Goodbye,” which delves into the difficulties they faced during that phase in their relationship.
“That song is about when we almost broke up. We were eight years in a long-distance relationship and we felt really apart, we weren’t doing things together, we weren’t creating a future,” she told Daily Telegraph.
“But we would never say goodbye, we couldn’t. We still always say see you later.
“Finally we worked out how to salvage our relationship and made the move together and eight more years later, we’re living this beautiful life together in Sydney.”
Jessica Mauboy and Themeli Magripilis married in a small church in Darwin in July 2022, with the reception held at the Mindil Beach Casino Resort. Magripilis proposed to Mauboy in 2019, and their wedding was initially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Mauboy previously told 7NEWS.com.au of the wedding.
“We always spoke about it (getting married) and we would talk about how strong our families are and they get along really well.
“I was always on edge of ‘I don’t know if this is gonna work.’
“I think it really helped that he didn’t know who I was, and we made a pact that we were going to create this relationship and keep it alive.
“He’s such a good fella and I think it really helps that he doesn’t work in the music industry.”
