Mr. Burke, who is visiting Ghana with his wife Angel Burke, a Member of Parliament in the Jamaican Legislature, spoke about Ghana’s contributions to the struggle for emancipation and sports, particularly football.

He acknowledged that he had faced ridicule for his support of the Black Stars, but remained steadfast in his belief that they are a force to be reckoned with. According to him, Ghana has qualified for the finals of the FIFA World Cup three times, a feat that is no small achievement.

Mr. Burke explained that he and his wife chose to visit Ghana because it holds a special place in the history of the Caribbean. It was a point where strong Africans were forced and carried to the Caribbean, and Ghana’s struggle for independence and its contributions to the global sports scene have not gone unnoticed.

During their visit, the couple will be discussing the possibilities of legalizing medicinal cannabis and encouraging child education. They will also explore ways of strengthening Ghana-Jamaican ties in the fields of tourism, culture, business and sports.

The couple will also attend the wedding of their son to a Ghanaian lady at Mpese, Sowutuom in the Greater Accra region. They were warmly welcomed at the Kotoka International Airport by Madam Carol Davies-Pryce, co-founder of new initiative Jamaica Affairs with Roc factory, as well as chiefs and traditional leaders of Mpese and Sowutuom.

For the most part, Mr. Burke’s visit highlights the deepening relationship between Jamaica and Ghana, as well as the growing recognition of Ghana’s contributions to the global sports scene. As Mr. Burke noted, the Black Stars have done well and enough to put Ghana on the map, and their achievements should be celebrated and supported.
