Matt Gutman was born on December 5, 1977, in Westfield, New Jersey. He received his education at Newark Academy, where he was honored as a scholar-athlete football player. He went on to graduate from Williams College in 2000.
Following his graduation from college, he debuted his career as a reporter for News 12 New Jersey. In 2005, he joined ABC News as a correspondent for Good Morning America. He has also reported for World News Tonight, Nightline, and 20/20.
