The legal team for Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah has expressed surprise at the Ghana Police Service’s choice to detain their client. COP Mensah is a key witness in the ongoing investigation into an alleged plot to unseat the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Three police officers who were reportedly involved in the conspiracy were suspended, according to a statement the Police Service released on Thursday.
COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi are among the police detained.
The police took this action in reaction to an audio recording that was leaked and then extensively disseminated on social media and other websites.
The three top police officials are purportedly heard discussing plans and methods for perhaps ousting the current IGP with the help of Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), on the tape.
In an interview with Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem on Friday, Kwaku Owusu Agyeman, the main attorney for COP Mensah, voiced their amazement at the police’s conduct.
“We were expecting that the service would allow Parliament to conduct its own investigation. As you are aware, the purpose of the probe is to establish the facts surrounding the allegations that have become public knowledge. Therefore, it is quite unexpected for us that this suspension has been imposed” he stated.
“Nevertheless, we accept this development in good faith. We will also examine what rights our client has in this situation… In the days ahead, we will communicate our course of action” Mr. Agyeman said.
The legal team defending COP George Alex Mensah stated that they had anticipated the situation to be handled differently and that they now intend to evaluate their client’s rights and select their next steps in light of this development.
