Kofi Koranteng, a renowned entrepreneur and human rights activist, has announced his intention to run for president in the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate. In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Koranteng pledged to overhaul the governance system in Ghana to address issues of bad leadership and corruption, which he believes have been the bane of the country’s development.

According to Mr Koranteng, corruption has plagued Ghana’s progress for far too long, and it is time for a change. He promised to bring this change to reality by ensuring that good leaders are elected into positions of power. He believes that the current Constitution has outlived its relevance and usefulness, and he plans to completely amend it if elected.

In addition, Mr Koranteng proposes the use of technology to fight corruption and modernize agriculture. He believes that a lean administration will prevent burdening ordinary taxpayers and eliminate waste, which will increase the efficiency of public institutions and promote the development agenda of the country.

Mr Koranteng acknowledges that the Constitution has given too much power to the executive, making it problematic for the President to have the sole prerogative to appoint the Electoral Commission Chair, the Chief Justice, the Inspector General of Police, as well as heads of other state institutions. He promised to take a second look at the work of the Constitution Review Committee and the government’s White Paper to make necessary amendments.

Mr Koranteng expressed his hope to introduce a leadership style unique to Ghanaians that respects the country’s culture and values. He questioned the Constitution’s provision, which allowed the President to appoint the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, wondering whether the AG can boldly prosecute members of his own government.

In conclusion, Mr Koranteng’s presidential bid has caused a stir in the Ghanaian political space. As an independent candidate, he believes he has what it takes to lead Ghana to greatness by tackling corruption and instituting a governance system that promotes good leadership.
