Kwabena Agyepong, a former General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that he is opposed to the Agenda 111 initiative.

The civil engineer added that he couldn’t understand why the government decided to build so many hospitals at the same time, given the state of the economy.

President Akufo-Addo launched the Agenda 111 program on August 17, 2021, with the goal of building 111 district hospitals around the country to increase access to healthcare.

The project’s goal is to provide quality healthcare services to Ghanaians in every district and area of the country.

“The whole attempt to have agenda 111, I was not in favour of attempting to build a hundred and eleven hospitals at the same time, especially when we are going through economic turmoil,” he said in an interview with Keminni Amanor on TV3’s Hot Issues on January 7.

He believes that the government is stretching itself too thin, causing its influence on the country’s governance to go unnoticed by the general public.

Mr. Agyepong did highlight, however, that several of them (Agenda 111 hospitals) are nearing completion and would help to the government’s goal of boosting healthcare service.

“I think about thirty or so are nearing completion around the country. I don’t have the figures directly, but I can tell you there are a lot of them nearing completion. So, on that balance sheet, it looks good with the provision of infrastructure,” he said.
