A crowd surrounded Tamale District Court One on August 28, 2023, at around 0945 hours, in an attempt to obstruct court proceedings.
The enormous gathering ejected the magistrate, His Worship Mr. Amadu Issifu, as well as the staff, attorneys, and clerks.
The rowdy throng, which was equipped with sticks, stones, and other aggressive weapons, entered with more police, but one of them was stripped of his sidearm and severely beaten.
To stop the police from entering the area, they blocked the court’s entry and started burning truck tires.
Despite being attacked with stones, the cops were able to enter the courtyard. The mob also damaged the courthouse’s roofing and windows, which resulted in a number of staff members suffering injuries.
The police used water cannons and weapons to rescue the magistrate to safer ground as the crowd overran the building and entered the courtroom.
But Yakubu Mohammed and a woman both suffered gunshot wounds to the foot and thigh, respectively.
The commotion started after a tramadol purported dealer, Osman Alhassan, was arrested for possessing the dangerous narcotic and then released on bail by the court.
People accused of dealing narcotics in the Tamale Metropolis, including Osman, were arrested by a task team established in the neighborhood.
In Alhassan’s absence, the gang allegedly broke into his room and stole a few cartons of tramadol medication.
The cops were given the pills, and further investigations led to the arrest of Osman
In the course of a trial, he was granted court bail which has made some youth and chiefs unhappy.
