Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a prominent Al Thani Qatari royal family member. He served as the ruling Emir of Qatar for 18 years, from 1995 to 2013. In 2013, he abdicated the throne and handed it over to his son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
He is being referred to by the Qatari government as the Father Emir. He is one of the most powerful and influential figures in Qatar.
Hamad Al Thani age and early life
Hamad Al Thani was born on 1 January 1952, in Doha, Qatar. He was born to mother, Aisha bint Hamad Al Attiyah and father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani (17 September 1932-23 October 2016). His mother died shortly after he was born. His uncle raised him.
Hamad Al Thani was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in 1971. He was then commissioned in Qatar’s armed forces as a lieutenant colonel. Hamad Al Thani was appointed Heir Apparent of Qatar in 1977 and held the post until 1995.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has 24 children from three wives. His first wife, Sheikha Mariam bint Muhammad Al Thani, is the mother of 10 children. Hamad Al Thani’s second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Missned, gave birth to seven children.
Her children include the current Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Hamad’s third wife, Sheikha Noora bint Khalid Al Thani, also gave birth to seven children.
