Lincoln Younes, a former Home & Away actor, has taken a stance in the contentious Australia Day celebrations debate. On Friday, the Australian actor used social media to announce his participation in an anti-Australia Day rally. He posted a photo on Instagram, showing his presence at the event, where thousands gathered nationwide to protest the commemoration of January 26 and advocate for Indigenous rights.

In the caption accompanying the event snapshot, Younes used black, yellow, and red love hearts, representing the colors of the Aboriginal flag. The ex-soap star, nominated for a Logie last year, attended the rally with his friend and fellow actor, ABC star Costa Georgiadis. The duo opted for a low-key appearance, directing attention solely towards the cause at hand.

Australia Day has become a source of increasing controversy, with celebrities expressing divergent views on the matter. Samantha Armytage, for instance, expressed her support for Australia Day earlier in the week. The host of Farmer Wants a Wife took to Instagram, sharing an image of ten flags arranged in a silver cup on a coffee table in her home.

The presenter then wrote son top of the snap: “Best country in the world.”

This year, a number of stores and local councils decided to forego Australia Day events, reflecting a shift in attitudes towards commemorations on January 26. On that date in 1788, the First Fleet of British ships arrived at Sydney Cove, Port Jackson, establishing the colony of New South Wales.

However, for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, this anniversary is not a cause for celebration, as it symbolizes the beginning of the dispossession and marginalization of Indigenous Australians.
