According to the 2022 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey Third Quarter Labour Statistics Report, Ghana is facing a serious unemployment crisis, especially among females. To tackle this crisis, Ghana needs selfless and high-quality leaders who can implement policies that will benefit the youth and create job opportunities. Austin Gamey, a labour consultant, believes that Ghana’s future depends on its leadership quality.

Gamey highlighted that despite the implementation of several brilliant policies such as the Planting for Food and Jobs and the One District, One Factory, many citizens have not benefitted from them due to poor leadership. He stressed the need for selfless leaders, especially in the political front, to guide Ghana into doing what it needs to do and propel it out of its economic strangulation and doldrums.

The statistics revealed in the report are alarming. Two out of every three unemployed persons in Ghana are females, and about two-thirds of employed persons are vulnerably employed. The transition from informal employment to unemployment is five times more common than the movement from formal employment into unemployment.

The report suggests that Ghana must tackle this unemployment crisis head-on by creating job opportunities and reducing the gender gap in employment. However, without high-quality leadership, these solutions may not be implemented effectively. Ghana needs leaders who are willing to serve the nation and prioritize its citizens over their own interests.

For the most part, Ghana has the potential to become an economic powerhouse with a bright future. However, to achieve this, the country must address its leadership crisis and tackle its unemployment problem. High-quality leadership is critical to creating a prosperous future for Ghana and its people.
