K.T. Hammond has been charged with contempt of court by the attorneys representing James Gyakye Quayson, the member of parliament for Assin North.
The attorneys claim in the writ that the Trade Minister made “irresponsible prejudicial comments” on the current criminal investigation into the Assin North MP.
“That in an interview on 4th July 2023 on a TV station, Oyerepa TV, the Respondent categorically pronounced the accused person guilty of the charges for which he is standing trial in this court, and the Respondent went ahead and stated that the Accused/Applicant will go to prison.
“That by the words of the Respondent which have been widely publicized nationally and internationally, the Respondent is violating the right of the Accused/Applicant to be presumed innocent as well as the right of the accused to a fair trial.
“That the said words of the Respondent are also in contempt of this Honorable Court as they are extremely prejudicial to the lawful process of this Honorable Court.”
The Attorney-General’s Office has accused Mr. Quayson, the MP for Assin North, of forgery and perjury, and he is now facing trial.
Additionally, he is charged with intentionally lying to a public official and filing nominations for the 2020 election while still holding Canadian citizenship.
He has, however, requested a suspension of the proceedings before the High Court in anticipation of an appeal in a move on notice.
However, Mr. Hammond is said to have said that his fellow politician will be found guilty and sentenced to prison.
