The Public Utilities Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress and some staff of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) have staged a protest against the nomination of Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah as Deputy Managing Director (MD), Finance and Administration.

The protesters, who were clad in red, claim that Mr. Nuamah is not qualified for the job and, therefore, should not be considered for the position. They called on the appointing authority to consider someone from the company with expertise other than an unqualified individual.

Speaking to the media, Samuel Amo-Kakabaah, the first Vice Trustee of the Public Utilities Workers’ Union, stated that “Our position is very clear and simple, we want to state on record that we are not against the appointment of heads of entity by the presidency, but our concern is that the position of the Managing Director is an appointee of the presidency, but the Deputy Managing Director’s position is a position we feel should be filled with people with both the technical and institutional knowledge of our operations.”

The protesters claim that Mr. Nuamah lacks the professional qualifications required to be Deputy MD, and they believe that appointing someone without the appropriate technical knowledge would hinder the Managing Director’s ability to effectively carry out their duties.

The workers have written a petition to the Chief of Staff, and copied the director of SIGA, board chairman of Ghana Water, Managing Director, and the Minister. They hope their message will be heard and that the appointing authority will consider someone else for the role.

The nomination of Mr. Nuamah has caused a stir among the workers at GWCL, and it remains to be seen whether the appointing authority will heed their demands.
