Greater Accra Boxing Association receives boxing equipment from MAS Foundation

On Thursday, April 6, 2023, the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) and the Greater Accra Boxing Association (GABA) received donations from the recently-retired mayor of Accra, Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, through his MAS Foundation.

The former mayor addressed the crowd on what was also International Day of Sport, noting that the goal was to support grassroots growth in order to lay a solid foundation for the sport’s future, which, in his opinion, is the cornerstone for producing future world champions.

He claimed that having been born and raised in the James-Town, Ussher-Town neighbourhood, he has witnessed how boxing has improved the financial circumstances of participants, including coaches, sparring partners, promoters, managers, and even some fans. He believes that investing in the sport is the right move because it is a surefire way to reduce poverty in the neighbourhood.

He begged all well-meaning Ghanaians to sponsor the sport in order to assist get these kids off the streets and give their lives more purpose in society, especially businessmen and organisations located in or associated to the James-Town & Ussher-Town neighbourhoods.

He made a commitment to his network and connections to mobilise additional funds to promote the grassroots boxing industry, particularly in Ga-Mashie.

Alhaji Dauda Fuseini, the first vice president of the GBF, and Mr. Evans Bernie Johnson, the chairman, received the equipment, which also included three boxing rings, three heavy punching bags, many groyne guards, head guards, skipping ropes, hand wraps, speed balls, and gloves.

They thanked him and vowed to use the supplies effectively to ensure the desired outcome is realised.

The ceremony took place on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at the basketball court at the James Town, Accra, Old Accra City Engineers Yard.
