The stakeholders of the ABS Fishing Harbour in Sekondi Takoradi, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Maritime Authority have jointly increased their efforts to keep the Fishing Harbour clean at all times.

The fishermen have recently shown a devotion to this cause after several interactions with the Port Authority and the Maritime Authority.

Environmental management supplies have been given in support of the collaborative effort by members of the Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association (GIFA), Canoe Fishers Association, the GPRTU, Fish Market Mammies, and the Essikado Chief Fisherman, all of whom operate out of the ABS Fishing Port in Sekondi.

The Essikado Chief Fisherman acknowledged the necessity for a cooperative effort and gave the authorities assurances that each boat owner would use the different tools for proper waste management both at sea and on land.

The ABS Fishing Harbour’s manager, Henry Papa Oppong, indicated that this programme falls under the slogan his organisation created: “Own the Port and Build a Better Future.”

According to Mr. Henry Papa Oppong, the purpose of the event is to educate the various parties involved—fisherman, fishmongers, fish mummies, and boat owners—about the importance of maintaining clean waters. The manager of the ABS Fishing Harbour issued a warning to the fishing community not to litter and warned anybody who did so would be penalised.

The Ghana Maritime Authority’s Western Area Deputy Director, Technical, Capt., expressed appreciation for the teamwork.

“I’m delighted to report that the response has been quite positive and that the local males are eager to participate. When you discussed beach cleaning a few years ago, it was like telling a story.
