4,279 students studying at Ghana’s various universities and colleges have received new scholarships from the government through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
The recipients span the various undergraduate and graduate study programs.
In comparison to the two thousand seven hundred and four (2,704) awardees for the year 2022, this number reflects an increase of sixty-three percent (63%) of successful applications.
The distribution of award recipients by types of degrees and programs is as follows: Two thousand nine hundred and fifty-one (2,951) beneficiaries are enrolled in certificate or degree programs, while one thousand three hundred and twenty-one (1,328) are enrolled in master’s or doctoral programs in private and public universities and colleges around Ghana.
In addition, 1,963 recipients—or 46% of all recipients—are enrolled in programs linked to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while 2,316 recipients—or 54% of all recipients—are enrolled in courses relating to humanity.
The Fund has transferred a total of GH25,278,029.39 in fees assigned to grantees into the accounts of their institutions as of August 2, 2023.
It will be noted that GETFund invited potential candidates to apply for the local scholarships via its online portal designed for the receipt of scholarship applications and the administration of same in December 2022 by advertising to the general public.
22,000 applications were submitted successfully in total. The Board of Trustees of the Fund decided to raise the number of spots available to the current high number of 4,279 recipients due to the tremendous amount of interest in the scholarships.
“It must be placed on record that as of August 2, 2023, about three hundred (300) successful applicants have still not accepted the scholarship offers sent to them via their email addresses, although efforts have been made to contact them. Hence, the Fund is unable to process their documentation for further action,” GETFund announced in a statement.
