Indiscriminate bush burning has been identified as the cause of a recent road accident at Ekumfi-Edukuma near Apam in the Central Region of Ghana. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on the public, especially hunters and farmers, to desist from this practice to protect the ecological endowment of the country.
The incident, which occurred early Monday morning, involved four vehicles traveling in different directions. Poor visibility from a thick smoke that emanated from road-shoulder bush burning caused the accident, with some of the vehicles getting burnt in the process. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
According to the Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Divisional Officer III Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Service received information from eyewitnesses and quickly responded to salvage the situation. He cautioned that the careless burning of bushes, particularly along major highways, poses a serious threat to the ecosystem and human existence.
For the most part, bush burning is a common practice in Ghana, especially during the dry season. However, it is not only illegal but also hazardous. It destroys wildlife habitats, leads to soil degradation, and exacerbates climate change by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The GNFS has warned that people who contravene the law on burning will be vigorously pursued and dealt with ruthlessly. The public is therefore advised to report any incidents of bush burning to the authorities.
In a nutshell, we all have a responsibility to protect the environment and preserve our natural resources for future generations. We should avoid practices that harm the ecosystem and instead adopt sustainable alternatives. Together, we can make Ghana a safer and healthier place to live in.
