The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) General Secretary, Abraham Koomson, has criticized the government and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for the introduction of new tax revenues which were recently approved by Parliament. The GFL argues that the new taxes are needless and come at a time when Ghanaians are already paying seventeen other taxes.

In his interview with Moro Awudu, Koomson highlighted the existing taxes being paid by Ghanaians, including import duty, import VAT, processing fee, ECOWAS Levy, Network Charge VAT, Network Charge Covid-19 levy, Health, Ghana’s Shippers Authority SNF fee, Import National Health Insurance, Network Charge National Health Insurance, IRS Tax deposit, and Special Import Levy. He went on to criticize the Majority MPs who initially called for the sacking of the Finance Minister but quickly took a U-Turn.

According to Koomson, the GFL, along with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), petitioned Parliament through the Speaker dated 3rd February 2023, and even followed up by going to Parliament to meet the leadership there. However, they could not access the Speaker since he was involved in other activities.

AGI also expressed disappointment at the passage of the three revenue bills, saying it came on the heels of an already harsh business climate. The association said the approval poses dire consequences for the industry, adding that the tax regime does not motivate local production and formal business operations.

The Ghanaian government must consider the concerns of these associations and avoid imposing further unnecessary taxes on Ghanaians. While the government requires revenue to finance development projects, the burden of taxation must not fall solely on the already struggling citizens.
