Residents of the Gbi Traditional Area, in especially Gbi Godenu and Wegbe, were involved in a terrible occurrence that left them still mourning their losses one week later.
Property was destroyed as a result of the horrific event that took the lives of two residents.
Torgbe Osei III, the Divisional Chief of Gbi Godenu, who has been narrating his own terrifying encounter with the police, claimed that the armed cops broke the windscreens of his car and those of his wife before taking 20,000 from her.
“The police smashed my car and that of my wife packed in front of my house and even took an amount of ₵20,000 from her bag as well as the many other things they took away, to the extent of even taking goods in the shops of residents in the area after destroying their property,” Torgbe Osei III lamented.
When the police raided and damaged the neighborhoods, Torgbe Osei III observed that they acted carelessly and without compassion.
In order to bring justice and punishment, the Gbi Traditional Authorities have demanded that a committee be immediately formed to look into the situation and handle any prior instances of police aggression in the neighborhood.
According to Torgbi Osei, the issue of police brutality in the Gbi Traditional Area has to be thoroughly examined, the offenders punished to serve as a deterrent to others, and some discipline needs to be instilled in the Hohoe Municipality’s police force.
Philip Yao Apawu, a witness, stated that even a week after the heinous act, people are still troubled by it.
Mr. Apawu encouraged the government to act quickly in response to the Paramount Chief’s request to look into the situation and submit a report to the Gbi Traditional Council so that the people, particularly those who lost their lives, might receive justice.
Noble The MCE for the Hohoe Municipality, Daniel Awume, also related how, on that specific day, he came dangerously close to being shot by police, adding that the officers’ conduct were regrettable.
As he collaborates with interested parties to find a long-term solution, he has urged for calm to be restored.
