John Dramani Mahama, former President of Ghana, has promised to take the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the people by campaigning from door-to-door, house-to-house, and adopting the style of Jehovah’s Witnesses. During an interaction with delegates of the party in Sissala West, Mr. Mahama stated that Ghanaians are calling for the NDC to return to office as they have realized that the allegations against the party were all lies.
According to the former President, excessive borrowing has been the hallmark of the Akufo-Addo administration, and this has led to an increase in the national debt with no infrastructure projects to show for it. Mr. Mahama highlighted that when he left office in 2016, the debt was GHS120 billion, and it was accompanied by visible infrastructure projects. However, the debt has now skyrocketed to almost GHS 600 billion, but there are no corresponding projects to justify the increase in debt.
Mr. Mahama stated that it is disappointing that despite the increase in debt, there is no clean drinking water, hospitals, or infrastructure projects to show for it. He opined that the NDC has the right policies to provide Ghanaians with the essential infrastructure they need. He urged the NDC to take advantage of the massive support they have from Ghanaians to work hard and regain power to restore good governance and accountability to the nation.
For the most part, the former President’s message is centered on the need for Ghanaians to give the NDC another chance to lead the nation since they have the right policies to transform the nation. He also stressed the need for the party to take their campaign to the grassroots level to reach out to as many Ghanaians as possible. Mr. Mahama’s criticism of the current administration’s borrowing spree echoes a concern that many Ghanaians have expressed. He stressed the importance of borrowing only when necessary and investing in visible infrastructure projects that can improve the lives of Ghanaians.
In a nutshell, Mr. Mahama’s message is clear: The NDC is the right party to lead Ghana to prosperity, and they will campaign tirelessly to regain power. The former President believes that with the massive support from Ghanaians, the NDC can emerge victorious in the upcoming election and bring real change to the nation.
