On May 1, former President John Dramani Mahama recognized and celebrated Ghanaian workers for their unwavering dedication to the country. He praised their commitment to holding the “ship of state afloat” despite the numerous challenges they face in their daily work.
According to the Ghana Statistical Service, the country’s unemployment rate is at an all-time high, which places an additional burden on government workers such as teachers, health workers, civil servants, and security personnel. As a result, existing workers have to take on extra responsibilities, which negatively impact their families’ well-being and work-life balance.
Mr. Mahama believes that the country’s economic management is primarily responsible for this unfortunate situation. He states that the current government has failed in numerous areas, leading to a catastrophic increase in unemployment, collapsed businesses, and the mismanagement of crucial social protection funds.
To address this dire situation, Mr. Mahama called for an open and frank national dialogue on Ghana’s economy. He believes that it is essential to share ideas and build a consensus on the way forward for the common good. He also urged the International Monetary Fund to intervene and bail out the government to inject capital, credibility, and prudence into the management of Ghana’s economy. Failure to act urgently could lead to the government’s inability to pay workers.
Mr. Mahama salutes Ghanaian workers for their unwavering commitment to the country. He recognized their role as the backbone of the nation and highlighted their vital contributions to keeping the country afloat during these trying times. He encouraged them to hope for a better future that protects the investments of retirees, revamps collapsed businesses and banks, creates genuine jobs, and ensures that statutory vehicles that offer protection to the vulnerable in society are not cruelly starved of funds.
For the most part, Mr. Mahama’s message to Ghanaian workers is that they are the Black Star of hope and honor that the national anthem proudly extols. Their dedication and steadfastness inspire the country to be resolute in its efforts to build the Ghana that the people want and deserve.
