Former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has warned political parties against making statements that could incite violence and chaos. He expressed his concern about the political theatrics and strategies that politicians employ to rile up their supporters, noting that politics in Ghana needs a major transformation.

“We have maligned people in this country. We’ve character assassinated people in this country but we have reached a stage where there should be clean politics,” he said on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo” on Wednesday.

Allotey Jacobs believes that politicians are leaving a negative imprint on the youth and future generations, and emphasized that “we have reached a stage where our politics should be clean. Clean politics, not politics of deceit but truthful politics. Let us digest the truth and tell the people the truth”.

His comments were made in relation to the recent meeting between the Ghana Police Service and the two largest political parties in the country, the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress. During the meeting, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo Dampare, assured the parties of the impartiality of the police in enforcing law and order.

The IGP also cautioned the parties against interfering in the work of the Police and informed them of initiatives that the Police Service has implemented under its Police Transformation Agenda to enhance security in all elections.

As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, Allotey Jacobs advised political parties to avoid making seditious statements and focus on clean politics and their polling stations if they want to win. He stressed that “one party is going to win but it is going to be the party that becomes smarter, not the party that shows muscles and become more violent.”
