Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, the former Minister of Trade and Industry, has offered to provide the current Ghanaian government with “key ideas” to achieve economic independence. Speaking to journalists on May 8th, he said that he would be happy to use his over-four-decade experience to help lift Ghanaians out of the current economic quagmire. He emphasized that Ghana’s economic challenges require more than a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Dr. Spio-Garbrah believes that Ghana’s economy is in tatters and off balance, and requires radical new ideas to recover. He is willing to offer his experience, gained from working with multinationals like the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Hill & Knowlton, and Credit Agricole of France, as well as helping nations like Indonesia, Turkey, and the Netherlands.
The former Communications Minister noted that his experience in governance could help the National Democratic Congress (NDC) steer Ghana towards economic recovery. He also threw his support behind John Dramani Mahama in the NDC’s Presidential Primaries on May 8th.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah believes that the country needs more than just a bailout and new strategies to mobilize sufficient new money into the economy. He stated that the major national institutions, such as the Presidency, Parliament, Judiciary, Media, Law Enforcement, and National Security Agencies, have become objects of scorn at one recent time or the other. He noted that many of Ghana’s banks have failed or been made to fail, and others are on various kinds of financial life-support.
For the most part, Dr. Spio-Garbrah’s message to the Ghanaian government is clear: the nation is bankrupt, broke, and impoverished, and it needs radical new ideas to move forward. He called on all NDC supporters to unite their resources and strengths behind President John Mahama to win the imminent Flagbearership contest and the 2024 general elections. In a nutshell, Dr. Spio-Garbrah is ready to offer his expertise to help Ghana emerge strong from the current economic crisis.
